MSBOA DISTRICT VI MIDDLE SCHOOL HONOR BAND HOSTED BY ANDREWS UNIVERSITY-- HOWARD PERFORMING ARTS CENTER MONDAY, MARCH 25, 2019
Dear Fellow Band Directors;
For eleven years, the Southwest Michigan Middle School Honors Band has been the fulfillment of the dreams of area directors. It was first created by Denisse Santos Stanbery and Alan Mitchell in the spring of 2008. Denisse moved on to teach in South Carolina and Alan Mitchell retired from teaching at Andrews this past spring. Over the years, the ensemble has exploded in popularity and starting last year, it is now a part of MSBOA. We are officially the Middle School Honors Band for District VI, so only District VI schools may participate in the event.
You, along with up to 12 of your seventh and eighth grade students are invited to attend this very special event. Through the generosity of many people, we are able to hold this honor band at the beautiful Howard Performing Arts Center on the campus of Andrews University. This year, we are again going to have TWO different ensembles. There will be one ensemble for seventh grade under the direction of Maureen Ross and one for eighth grade under the direction of Brian Topolewski
REGISTRATION IS IN TWO PARTS. First you will nominate your students, then they will be selected, and finally you will collect permission forms and registration fees. I have provided you with letters to give both to students who are nominated and those who are selected. There is a detailed instruction sheet as well as a worksheet to help you collect information from students and fill out the online form later in the packet.
The fee to attend this honor band for students is $35.00. This fee helps to defray some of the costs of the day, and includes the cost of lunch and supper on the day of the honor band as well as (new this year!) a t-shirt to wear for the evening concert. Band directors do not need to pay the fee to attend. However, any additional chaperones attending will need to pay the fee, as this includes the cost of their meals. This fee is non-refundable, except in case of emergency.
Nominations are due by Friday, February 8th, Fees are due by Friday, March 1st. Each school should provide ONE single check for the total made out to “Treasurer, MSBOA District VI.” Make sure your check clearly indicates which school matches the payment. These should be postmarked by March 1st and should be sent to: ATTN: Sarah Bopp Baseline Middle School 7357 Baseline Road South Haven, MI 49090
Each student is expected to bring black pants or skirt, black socks and shoes for the performance regardless of your school’s uniforms. Students will be provided with a t-shirt to wear for the performance. Please see the Student Expectations sheet for further details.
Each school in attendance must also have their band director in attendance. Please see the list of Band Director/Chaperone Expectations for further information. Directors will be assisting in rehearsals, especially during the sectionals. With two ensembles, we need every director in attendance for the entire day. Please check the schedule as it is very different from previous years.
Registration will begin at 8:30 AM, introductions start at 8:45 (this is earlier than previous years). Rehearsals will be held throughout the day, and will conclude with a concert at the Howard Performing Arts Center open to the public at 7:00 PM. The concert is free of charge. The concert repertoire will be announced shortly. As soon as we receive your registration forms and payments, you will be able to download and print parts for your selected students.
As far as transportation to and from the honor band, schools are expected to arrange their own transportation to Andrews University in the morning. After the performance in the evening, students will need to arrange for their own transportation home – hopefully their parents will attend the concert!
As in previous years, we will have a round table discussion. This year we will have a technology based discussion. PLEASE prepare something to share with your fellow directors that you find is a successful tool for your ensembles and e-mail handouts to me beforehand so I can upload them to our website.Basically choose something that enhances your program, you are proud of, and you use on a consistent basis that is worth sharing with other people (even if they may do something similar). I look forward to hearing from you, receiving your registration forms, and putting together an exciting event that will be remembered for years to come. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely, Sarah Bopp Director of Bands, Baseline Middle School Coordinator, MSBOA District VI Middle School Honors Band
